This story was written for my Sports Reporting class. We were tasked with writing a piece about a sport that we loved (I chose tennis), a dramatic topic, and to narrow down the information into a story easily read on a mobile phone or device.

Has Holger Rune reached the peak of his tennis career? This is a question that is highly debated amongst tennis fans since the parting of ways that he had with his coach and personal trainer, Patrick Mouratoglou, in July of 2024. Certain players on the ATP tour dread playing Holger Rune because of his sarcastic and obnoxious attitude. The effects of his attitude became too much for Mouratoglou to handle, and the pair went their separate ways. Like a toxic breakup cycle, with Rune being the abusive boyfriend, Mouratoglou has had to step away from his coaching position before. Joey Eskridge, Head Tennis Coach at Anderson University and member of the Professional Tennis Registry, has spoken about toxic coaching cycles, using Rune and Mouratoglou as the prime example.

Each time Rune and Mouratoglou have split, Rune decreases in his ranking, physically does not perform well, and he struggles with keeping his emotions under control. Rune has stated in his social media posts that this will be the last time that he and Mouratoglou will have a player-coach relationship. Both publicly announced that they are officially over. What does this look like for Holger Rune? Uncertainty.

Rune’s statistics have been abnormally low since his official split from Mouratoglou. For example, Rune was unable to make it past the Round of 16 at Wimbledon. In his next tournament, Rune played what is deemed to be an easier level tournament. He was barely able to make it to the Quarterfinals even though his opponents were anonymous players. In addition, Rune got demolished by a low ranked player at the U.S. Open in straight sets in August of 2024. This past week, he was slaughtered by Taylor Fritz at the Rolex Shanghai Masters in straight sets. Based on these statistics since leaving Mouratoglou, Rune’s professional tennis career is not looking too promising.

Rune has been quiet about the hiring process of his new coach. Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh Rezayeh has been training and working with him since the split. Rezayeh will likely never be able to fill the great shoes of Patrick Mouratoglou, who has been deemed the current greatest tennis coach in the world. Rune let his own emotions take over, once again, and he has potentially ruined his chance to remain a top ranked player on the ATP tour. Rune’s attitude towards Mouratoglou has cost him not only a world-renowned coach, but has also damaged his own reputation among the other ATP players.
